Third-gen Tacoma swapped the 4.0L 1GR-FE for the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 (D-4S port+direct injection, Atkinson cycle) and paired it with a new 6-speed automatic. Gained power and EPA mpg on paper; lost low-end torque feel. The TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road with rear locker, and the manual-transmission V6 are the enthusiast picks. Bookend with the 2nd-gen for the full Tacoma story.

Watch out: 6AT shift-shudder/hunting in 1st-3rd gear under light throttle. Multiple TSBs (T-SB-0017-17 et al), reflashes rarely fully cure it. Many owners just live with it.
