Tesla Model Y Original (2020-present)

20202025 · suv

Model Y launched in the US in March 2020 sharing roughly 75 percent of its parts with the Model 3 — same battery packs, same drive units, same interior tech, just 10 percent larger and crossover-shaped. Built at Fremont and (from 2022) Gigafactory Texas and Berlin. The 2022 Austin-built cars introduced the 4680-cell structural battery pack on long-range trims. Best-selling vehicle globally in 2023. A Highland-style refresh ('Juniper') launched in China late 2024 and is rolling to the US through 2025-2026.

Watch out: Heat-pump 'octovalve' failure in cold weather (early 2020-2021 builds) leaves the car with no cabin heat AND degraded battery preconditioning, sometimes mid-trip in freezing temperatures. NHTSA recall 22V-050 addressed a software fix; hardware failures past warranty are $1,500-$3,000.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
