Fifth-gen Outback was the brand's clearest pivot into mainstream crossover territory while keeping the wagon profile. FB25 2.5L flat-four or EZ36 3.6L flat-six (3.6R), Lineartronic CVT only — no manual option in the US. EyeSight driver-assist became the default ADAS package. Volume sales peak for the nameplate.
Watch out: FB25 oil consumption coverage continued (see BR Outback note); some reports of CVT shudder under load addressed by software updates. Otherwise reliability reputation is solid.
