Subaru Impreza 1st Generation (GC/GF, non-WRX)
1992–2001 · GC/GF · sedan
The first US Impreza arrived as a 1993 model in sedan (GC) and wagon (GF) forms with naturally aspirated flat-four engines (EJ18 1.8L early, then EJ22 2.2L, with the 2.5L EJ25D and later EJ251 arriving on RS and Outback Sport trims). FWD was offered on early base cars, AWD across most of the range. The turbocharged WRX was not sold in the US in this generation.
Watch out: Owner reports of EJ25D head-gasket failure on the 2.5L cars (a well-documented issue across Subaru naturally aspirated 2.5L engines of this era), aging timing belts, and rust on rocker panels, wheel arches, and rear strut towers on salt-belt cars.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
