Subaru BRZ / Toyota GR86 2nd Generation (ZD8/ZN8)
2022–2025 · ZD8/ZN8 · coupe
Second-gen Toyobaru launched 2022 with a new 2.4L FA24 naturally aspirated boxer-4 (228hp / 184 lb-ft, vs 205/156 on the old 2.0L) — the bigger displacement finally killed the 1st-gen torque dip. Subaru calls it BRZ (chassis ZD8); Toyota now calls it 'GR86' (ZN8) under the Gazoo Racing performance sub-brand instead of the old 'Scion/Toyota 86' name. 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Same fundamental formula: RWD, NA, light, communicative — just faster and easier to live with. Both cars built at Subaru's Gunma plant.
Watch out: Early-build (2022) FA24 connecting-rod-bearing failures — multiple documented engine failures on low-mileage cars. Subaru and Toyota have replaced engines under warranty on a case-by-case basis (and a US class action is in motion); the issue tapered with later production but track-driven cars should still monitor oil for metal.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
