Mitsubishi Eclipse 3G

20002005 · D5X · coupe

Third-generation Eclipse. The platform shift everyone resented, moved to the Chrysler/Mitsubishi PL platform shared with Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus coupes, with the iconic turbo 4G63 dropped entirely. Engines: 2.4L 4G64 I4 (~150hp) and 3.0L 6G72 V6 (~205hp; reduced to 200hp in 2002 with emissions tightening). 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. FWD only, no AWD turbo option survived. Coupe and Spyder convertible. Trims: RS, GS, GT, GTS (added 2003), plus convertible variants.

Watch out: The 6G72 V6 has a notorious timing-belt-and-water-pump-at-same-time interval (~60k miles), and the belt is interference, skip it and the engine is junked. The PL-platform interior plastics and door cards have aged badly. This is the Eclipse the enthusiast community pretends doesn't exist; it's also the cheapest Eclipse to own, by a wide margin.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
