Mercedes-Benz 190E W201 (Sole Generation)

19841993 · W201 · sedan

The W201 190E was Mercedes-Benz's first compact sedan and the predecessor to the C-Class. US sales ran from 1984 through 1993. Engines included the M102 four (190E 2.3), M103 inline-six (190E 2.6) and the Cosworth-developed 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 four-valve performance variants. The W201 introduced the multi-link rear suspension layout that defined modern Mercedes.

Watch out: Rust around jacking points, sunroof drains, rear shock mounts and the spare tire well is the dominant W201 issue today. Owner reports of cooling-system age and wiring brittleness are routine given the platform's age. The 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 use Cosworth-developed cylinder heads with their own service considerations and parts availability.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
