Lincoln Aviator 1st Generation

20032005 · UN152 · suv

First-gen Aviator (UN152) — body-on-frame midsize SUV based on the third-gen Ford Explorer (U152) architecture. Single engine: 4.6L DOHC InTech V8 (302hp/300 lb-ft) — same engine family as the Mustang Mach 1's 4-valve Mod motor. 5-speed 5R55W automatic. RWD or 4WD. Built at St. Louis Assembly. Short three-year run; replaced indirectly by the MKX (2007) and revived as a unibody crossover in 2020.

Watch out: 4.6L DOHC InTech V8 doesn't share the 3V Triton spark-plug issue (this engine pre-dated the 3V design) but has its own cam-chain tensioner failures with a tell-tale cold-start rattle that can grenade if ignored — $2,000-3,500 repair. Rear air suspension is standard and leaks at the bag seams around 100k. Generally a rare, well-built truck overshadowed by sibling Explorer / Mountaineer market noise.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
