Infiniti Q45 1st Gen (G50)
1990–1996 · G50 · sedan
Original Infiniti Q45, sold in the US 1990-1996 on the G50 chassis. 4.5L VH45DE 32-valve DOHC V8 (around 278 hp), paired exclusively to a 4-speed automatic. RWD. Full-size luxury sedan and Infiniti's brand-launch flagship, sold alongside the Lexus LS400 as Japan's first serious assault on the German luxury establishment. Notable for its initial 'no grille' front-end styling, replaced by a more conventional grille for 1994.
Watch out: Parts availability is the headline ownership issue today: VH45DE-specific components (distributor, ignition coils, specific sensors) are increasingly scarce, and the optional hydraulic active suspension (where equipped) is unsupported by Nissan and effectively unrepairable. Owner reports of cracked dashboards, climate control LCD pixel failure, and brittle interior plastics are universal across the run. The engine itself is mechanically robust. Pre-purchase: prefer cars without the active suspension (or with a passive conversion already done), verify the timing chain is quiet on cold start, and budget for cosmetic interior work on any honest survivor.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
