Ford Freestar Single Generation (2004-2007)

20042007 · MV1 · van

Front-wheel-drive minivan on a refreshed version of the Windstar's MV1 platform. Engine options: 3.9L Essex V6 (193 hp, US standard) and 4.2L Essex V6 (201 hp, Canada / export). 4-speed automatic (4F50N). Sold alongside the Mercury Monterey twin. Ford exited the minivan segment after 2007 - the next entry would be the Transit Connect in commercial trim, never a true minivan replacement.

Watch out: The 4F50N transmission is the defining failure - NHTSA opened an investigation into 2004-2005 models over numerous owner complaints centered on torque-converter spline-shaft failure, with the typical outcome being a full transaxle rebuild or replacement. Ford recalled the 2004-2005 model years for torque-converter replacement, but 2006-2007 vans show the same failure pattern despite no formal recall. The 3.9L / 4.2L Essex V6s also carry the head-gasket failure pattern that defines the Essex family. Salt-belt rust on rocker panels and rear quarters is widespread.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
