Chevrolet Suburban GMT400 (8th Generation)
1992–1999 · GMT400 · suv
The GMT400 Suburban launched as a 1992 model on GM's then-new GMT400 chassis shared with the C/K trucks. Engines included the 5.7L small-block V8 (TBI early, Vortec L31 from 1996), the 7.4L big-block V8 (L19/L29 Vortec from 1996), and the 6.5L Detroit turbo-diesel V8. 2WD (C1500/C2500) and 4WD (K1500/K2500) variants. The Suburban kept its barn-door rear gate as standard; tailgate was optional. Replaced by the GMT800 Suburban for 2000.
Watch out: Frame, rocker, and cab corner rust in salt-belt states is the dominant long-term issue. Owner reports of fuel-pump failures and intake gasket leaks on the 5.7L Vortec from 1996+ are well-documented.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
