Chevrolet Cobalt 1st Generation (Delta)

20052010 · Delta · sedan

The Cobalt launched for 2005 as Chevrolet's compact, replacing the long-running Cavalier on GM's Delta platform (shared with the Pontiac G5/Pursuit and Saturn Ion). Body styles were a coupe and a sedan. The base engine was the 2.2L Ecotec L61/LE5 four; the SS variant evolved through three configurations: the SS Supercharged (LSJ, 2.0L M62-blower, 2005-2007), the naturally-aspirated SS (LE5 2.4L, 2008-2010), and the SS Turbocharged (LNF 2.0L direct-injection turbo, 2008-2010). The Cobalt is central to the GM ignition-switch recall scandal.

Watch out: The Cobalt is the headline vehicle in the 2014 GM ignition-switch recall (NHTSA campaign 14V-047 and successors); a defective ignition switch could turn off, disabling airbags. Owner reports of power-steering motor failures and timing-chain wear are also widely documented.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
