Chevrolet Astro 1st Generation
1985–2005 · M-body · van
The Astro was a single-generation rear-wheel-drive (later AWD-optional) body-on-frame mid-size van built from the 1985 model year through 2005, sharing its platform with the GMC Safari. Engines began with the 2.5L Iron Duke four and 4.3L V6; from 1990 onward the 4.3L Vortec V6 was the only engine. AWD was added in 1990. The Astro outlived its planned replacement and stayed in production largely on commercial-fleet demand. Production ended May 2005.
Watch out: Rocker panel and lower door rust in salt-belt states is severe. Owner reports of front spindle/ball joint wear at higher mileage and 4L60E transmission failures are well-documented; the engine cover (doghouse) interior heat soak is a defining quirk.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
