BMW i3 I01 (Single Generation)
2014–2021 · I01 · hatchback
Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body on an aluminum chassis — uniquely engineered, weirdly proportioned, and culturally important. Battery grew from 22 kWh to 33 to 42 over the run. Optional REx (range extender) — a 2-cyl 647cc motorcycle engine as a generator. US sales ended after 2021 model year; global production ended July 2022. Already a cult classic.
Watch out: REx fuel-tank size is restricted in the US versus Europe (regulatory), shrinking emergency range. Early 22 kWh batteries lose meaningful capacity at high mileage. The rear suicide doors are great until you need a rear quarter-panel and discover the CFRP repair shop list.
