Acura TL 2nd Generation (UA4/UA5)

1999–2003 · UA4/UA5 · sedan

The second-generation TL, sold from 1999 to 2003, switched to a transverse layout and the 3.2L J32 V6, and moved production to Marysville, Ohio. It dropped the alphanumeric naming and was simply badged 3.2 TL, becoming one of Acura's best-selling models of the era. The enthusiast highlight is the Type-S, introduced for 2002, which raised the J32A2 V6 to about 260 hp. A 4-speed automatic was standard, with a 5-speed automatic arriving on later cars. This UA4/UA5 sedan defined the modern TL formula of a fast, well-equipped front-drive luxury sport sedan.

Watch out: The defining issue on these is the automatic transmission, which is a known weak point on the Honda-Acura 3.2L V6 cars of this era and can fail expensively; verifying fluid history and any transmission rebuild is essential. Otherwise watch for age-related issues on 20-plus-year-old cars, including front suspension wear and the usual aging seals and electronics.
