CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 26, 2026
TL;DR Brushless induction motor; CSA-listed (NRTL equivalent to UL/ETL, confirmed via Amazon product specs); PWMA-certified at 2000 PSI / 1.1 GPM working spec. Independent testing measured approximately 1,782 CU — within the practical band for light-to-moderate road grime. Standard 1/4" quick-connect accepts foam cannons; 1.1 GPM working spec produces serviceable foam. No active CPSC recall. Currently listed as out of stock on Amazon as of May 2026.
What it is and how it performs
The SPX3500 is a corded 13-amp brushless induction pressure washer with PWMA-certified working specs of 2000 PSI and 1.1 GPM. The 2300 Max PSI headline is a near-zero-flow peak measurement — TechGearLab's independent test recorded approximately 1,650 PSI and 1,782 cleaning units at the 15° and 40° nozzles, which falls within the practical range for removing light-to-moderate road grime on a regularly washed car. Per Amazon's product spec sheet, the SPX3500 uses a brushless induction motor — a meaningful durability differentiator compared to the universal-motor SPX3000 if the spec is accurate: no carbon brushes to wear, quieter operation, and longer expected service life. No independent teardown confirmation was available at time of review. Solid brass fittings and a stainless steel 34-inch lance reinforce a build that feels more durable than budget universal-motor competition. The 1/4" quick-connect accepts Sun Joe's own foam cannon (SPX-FC34-PRO) and most third-party foam cannons. The Total Stop System shuts the pump when the trigger is released, protecting the motor and pump during foam-soak pauses.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
The SPX3500 suits an owner washing one or two vehicles weekly who wants a foam cannon setup and a unit likely to outlast two or three seasons of regular use — the induction motor design addresses the primary failure point of budget universal-motor washers. The dual detergent tanks allow switching between soap types (shampoo for the body, degreaser for the wheels) without swapping bottles. Skip this unit if you routinely need to reach all four panels of a full-size truck without repositioning — the 20-ft hose is the same length as the entry-level SPX3000 and falls short of the 25-ft threshold where most owners stop needing to move the unit. For heavy multi-task use (deck cleaning, concrete, large vehicles), a higher-output or gas-powered alternative handles those loads with more headroom.
Safety and environmental impact
CSA certification (an OSHA-recognized NRTL equivalent to UL and ETL) was confirmed via Amazon product specs; the listing number was not independently verified in the CSA Group public database at time of research. PWMA certification verifies PSI and GPM performance claims, not electrical safety. No active CPSC recall as of May 2026. No lithium battery — dispose of via municipal e-waste programs (Best Buy drop-off, municipal hazardous waste events) at end of life. The brushless induction motor's longer expected lifespan means fewer units reaching the waste stream compared to short-lived universal-motor alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
Does the SPX3500 work with a foam cannon?▾
Yes — the SPX3500 uses a standard 1/4" quick-connect fitting that accepts most foam cannons without any adapter. Sun Joe's own foam cannon (SPX-FC34-PRO) is marketed as compatible with the SPX series, using a 1/4" quick connector. Third-party foam cannons from M MINGLE, FIXFANS, and MJJC all list SPX3500 compatibility. The PWMA-certified working flow is 1.1 GPM — at the lower threshold for thick foam generation. Foam cannon use is functional; users who want denser foam may find the max 1.48 GPM spec achievable at lower operating pressures.
Is the SPX3500 an induction motor or a universal (brush) motor?▾
The SPX3500 features a brushless induction motor, unlike the base SPX3000 which uses a universal (brush) motor. Amazon's product spec sheet lists the Item Type Name as 'Brushless Induction Electric Pressure Washer,' and this designation is consistent across all retailer listings. Induction (brushless) motors have no carbon brushes to wear out, which translates to quieter operation and longer expected service life compared to universal-motor pressure washers in the same price range. No independent teardown confirmation was available as of May 2026, but the spec is consistent across all sources.
Is the SPX3500 UL listed or ETL certified?▾
No UL or ETL listing was found for the Sun Joe SPX3500 in North American safety databases as of May 2026. The SPX3500 is CSA-listed — CSA is an OSHA-recognized Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) equivalent to UL and ETL, widely accepted by US building codes and retailers. Amazon product specs confirm 'Specification Met = CSA.' The SPX3500 is also PWMA-certified, which verifies PSI and GPM performance claims, not electrical safety. The CSA listing number was not independently verified in the CSA Group public database at the time of this review.
What is the actual cleaning output of the SPX3500 — not just the label spec?▾
TechGearLab's independent test measured approximately 1,650 PSI and 1,782 cleaning units (PSI × GPM) at the 15° and 40° nozzles — lower than the 2,300 Max PSI headline spec, and closer to the PWMA-certified working spec of 2,000 PSI at 1.1 GPM (= 2,200 label CU). The 2,300 PSI and 1.48 GPM specs represent max-peak values at different operating points, not simultaneous measurements. At practical car-washing flow rates, expect roughly 1,700–1,800 CU — adequate for light-to-moderate road grime on a regularly washed daily driver.
Is there an active CPSC recall on the SPX3500?▾
No. The CPSC recall database was searched on May 24, 2026, and no active recall was found for the Sun Joe SPX3500 pressure washer. The only Sun Joe recall found was a 2022 cordless lawn mower recall related to a laceration hazard — unrelated to pressure washers.

Big performance, small noise
I've used a couple different Honda-powered gas pressure washers previously, borrowed from various friends. Every time I borrow one, it seems to be in need of maintenance. I seem to spend more getting them serviced, just to get them running, than I would on renting one. So, I started looking at electric models. Even if it lacks the power and takes longer to complete an area, I'll have more incentive to keep stuff from getting really bad if I have one of my own.My biggest concern was whether electrics would have sufficient PSI. My property has a lot of concrete, and everything I've read says you need around 3000 PSI for cleaning moss off of it. Most electric models top out at 2000 PSI. I decided to give the Sun Joe SPX3500 a try, both because its 2300 PSI spec sort of splits the difference between typical electric and gas models, and because its induction motor usage hints at higher quality components for heavier duty use.I've had spotty luck lately with Amazon Warehouse purchases, but decided to risk it on a "used, like new, distressed packaging" unit at a pretty heavily discounted price (only ~$10 more than the 2000 PSI Sun Joe that is most often reviewed). I was pleased to see that it doesn't appear to have ever been taken out of the box, and definitely never assembled or ran -- someone must have simply changed their mind and returned it.Performance-wise, it's everything I had hoped for and more. Using the 25° green tip, its power is indistinguishable from the 3100 PSI Honda-powered gas model with 40° white tip. (I haven't tried any of the other tips yet.) That provides a wide enough spray pattern to have no concerns about the pressure-time tradeoff of electric.Noise-wise, it sounds exactly like a vacuum sealer while in use. Keep in mind, that's what you hear above and beyond the spray, and being outside lets the noise dissipate. Unlike gas models, it's very comfortable to use without hearing protection. So, fire away on sunny days and don't worry about funny ear tan lines from muffs. :)Assembly is very straight forward and takes only a couple minutes without the instructions. One nice thing I noticed is, unlike gas models, when you squeeze the trigger the water pressure doesn't kick on at 100%. Instead, it takes half a second or so to ramp up, making it less jolting.Note to self: I ran it with a 100' regular orange extension cord, which isn't rated for high power draw but has run numerous power tools just fine for me. After running the pressure washer like that for an hour, the inside of the plastic cord reel was quite warm to the touch. So, be sure to use a higher gauge cord if going that route.Longevity is still TBD, but there were no leaks and nothing problematic to report. After one use, this is one of my more satisfying purchases.Edit: After submitting the review, I happened across a "related items" link to another SPX3500 listing which is for factory renewed units at the same price I paid. So, a) the listings must be cross-linked when clicking on other purchase options, and b) maybe the factory cleans everything up like new and sends out freshly sealed plastic bags and a new box (no cut tape evident) and everything?
