TL;DR Image stabilization, a built-in polarizing filter, and what3words Emergency SOS are genuinely useful — but documented SD card corruption after 12–18 months and a battery that drains too fast for real parking-lot monitoring without a separately purchased hardwire cable hold this back.
Footage quality and parking mode
- Night vision: 4K with image stabilization; daytime footage benefits from reduced motion blur on rough roads; multiple independent reviewers document license plates unreadable at driving speed in low light — real-world night performance does not consistently match the 4K spec.
- Parking mode: Motion and impact detection available; lithium-ion battery drains almost immediately in standby — effective parking monitoring requires the separately sold constant-power cable, which is not included.
The what3words Emergency SOS integration is a practical differentiator for rural driving. SD card corruption has been documented across multiple community sources at 12–18 months of ownership.
Who it's for
Buy if:
- Daytime footage with minimal motion blur is the priority — image stabilization is a genuine differentiator on rough or unpaved roads
- You drive in rural areas where what3words Emergency SOS has practical value
- You pair it with the constant-power cable from day one and don't rely on battery-powered parking mode
Skip it if:
- Parking-lot protection matters — the battery drain issue is well-documented and the required cable costs extra
- Night footage quality is the deciding criterion — dual-STARVIS-2 units outperform it at lower stated resolution
- You plan to own it beyond 18 months without actively monitoring SD card health
Frequently asked questions
Does the Nextbase 622GW have parking mode?▾
The 622GW has motion and impact detection for parking mode, but the lithium-ion battery drains rapidly in standby — multiple community owners report it becoming non-functional within minutes of the engine shutting off. Sustained parking monitoring requires a separately purchased hardwire cable (Nextbase Constant Power Cable) to draw power from the vehicle's fuse box.
Is the Nextbase 622GW 4K footage actually 4K quality?▾
The 622GW records at 4K UHD (3840×2160 at 30fps), but community footage comparisons suggest the real-world footage quality — particularly at night — does not consistently match what that resolution implies. Independent reviewers have documented license plate legibility challenges at speed that dual-Sony-STARVIS-2 competitors at similar or lower resolution outperform.
What is what3words on the Nextbase 622GW?▾
What3words is a location system that divides the world into 3-meter squares, each with a unique three-word address. When Emergency SOS is triggered on the 622GW, it sends the what3words address of the vehicle's location to emergency services — a more precise location indicator than GPS coordinates alone in rural or unfamiliar areas.

Works well, app is very buggy. The camera and the video is perfect.
I have learned the hard way that drivers, including myself, are very reckless, and inconsiderate to other drivers.Unfortunately I have had four car accidents over the past 6 years, all low speed, non-injury, and I was able to drive off without having the vehicle towed. The worst part; the other drivers, who I believe were at fault, will lie like rugs in order to prevent being punished by their insurance company, and/or try to get my insurance company to pay for the damage to their vehicles by laying the blame solely on me and my vehicle. The first car accident I was recompensed and my vehicle was repaired, that was apparently a fluke, and since then the other drivers lied, did not respond, or their insurance companies flat out denied my claim.I was asked by one of the insurance adjusters if I had video of the accident, and once he explained that some vehicles have built in cameras.Fast forward several years, I opted to buy the earlier model of this nextbase camera, it was (just like this model) very easy to install, the value for the money was pretty decent, and the overall video quality was great. Now, granted the wifi connectivity and the app leaves much to be desired, but with a little perseverance, you can and will connect and be able to upload/download to the camera. The forward facing camera helps with a 130 degree span, ensuring everything is captured that possibly can be seen from the front driver and passenger's seat. I opted to get the wired rear-facing camera, this was integral in one of the accidents, as the other driver stated that I pulled out in front of him and he rear-ended me because he couldn't stop. That statement was quickly nullified when the rear facing video showed that I had pulled on to the street when the other driver was well over a city block.Ultimately I am a big believer in this device, I haven't had any failures, freezing up, turning off nor not turning on. I also purchased the hard wire install kit, and as such, the camera turns on when the key is turner to accessory, and turns off when I turn the car off.The only complaint I have with this camera is the app, and spotty wifi connection.
