TL;DR One-step cleaner-wax that combines mild kaolin abrasive with carnauba — handles light oxidation in a single pass, but durability lands at 2–3 months on a daily driver because the abrasive content limits how thick the wax film can be.
What it is and how it performs
Apply a thin film with a foam pad, work it into lightly oxidized paint with light pressure (the kaolin abrasive does the cleaning), wait 5–10 minutes for the haze, then buff off with a quality microfiber. A full car takes 75–90 minutes — comparable to the Pure Brazilian Carnauba sibling. The result is a clean, mildly warm shine — not the deep show-car glow of the Pure Carnauba, because the abrasive content prevents the thicker carnauba film a finishing wax produces. Community evidence consistently lands at 2–3 months of beading on a daily driver, shorter than pure paste waxes by design — this is the trade-off for the one-step cleaner+wax convenience.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Buy this for one-step convenience on lightly oxidized paint — when you want to skip the polish step but still get a layer of carnauba protection in a single application. Daily drivers with mild swirls and light oxidation that don't warrant a full multi-stage detail are the right fit. Skip it if your paint is already polished and corrected — the Pure Brazilian Carnauba (05550) sibling delivers a meaningfully warmer and longer-lasting finish on already-prepared paint. Skip it as well if you have an existing ceramic coating: the kaolin abrasive will degrade the coating; use a coating-safe paste wax (Pure Carnauba 05550 or P21S) instead.
Safety and environmental impact
The 2015 GHS-format SDS classifies the product DANGER for three health hazards: H312 (Acute Dermal Toxicity Cat 4 — harmful in contact with skin), H317 (Skin Sensitization Cat 1 — may cause allergic skin reaction), and H304 (Aspiration Toxicity Cat 1 — may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways). The skin-route hazard cluster is more severe than the Pure Carnauba sibling (which carries H317 + H304 only) — bare-hand application is genuinely contraindicated; nitrile gloves are mandatory per SDS §8. SDS §15 explicitly states no Proposition 65 chemicals. Environment is leave-on; the heavy combined petroleum-distillate carrier (50–100% of formula) puts estimated VOC in the 351–550 g/L bracket. Outdoor or open-garage application required.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Mothers Cleaner Wax (05500) and Pure Carnauba Wax (05550)?▾
The Cleaner Wax (05500) contains a mild kaolin abrasive that cleans light oxidation and applies wax in one step — designed for users who want to skip the polish step on lightly oxidized paint. The Pure Brazilian Carnauba (05550) is a finishing wax only with no cleaner, designed for paint that has already been clayed and polished. Cleaner Wax durability is shorter (2–3 months versus 3–4 for the Pure version) because the abrasive content limits how thick a wax film can be applied. Pick 05500 for one-step convenience on lightly oxidized paint; pick 05550 for the full multi-step show-car finish.
How long does Mothers Cleaner Wax actually last?▾
Community evidence from r/AutoDetailing 60-day threads, AutoGeek forum tests, and long-term Amazon reviews consistently shows 2–3 months of visible water beading on a daily driver washed weekly. This is shorter than pure paste waxes because the kaolin abrasive component limits how thick the protective wax film can be applied. Mothers does not publish a specific durability claim — the marketing focuses on the one-step cleaning + waxing convenience rather than longevity, which matches the community's experience.
Will Mothers Cleaner Wax remove swirls or fix scratches?▾
No — the kaolin abrasive in this product is mild, designed only to remove light oxidation and dirt, not to polish out swirl marks or scratches. For swirl correction, use a dedicated polish or compound first (Mothers makes 05101 Pure Polish for light correction). The Cleaner Wax is best for paint that needs only mild cleaning before waxing, or for one-step maintenance on a daily driver between deeper detail sessions.
Why does it carry a DANGER signal word?▾
The DANGER signal word in SDS §2 is driven by three Category 1/4 health classifications: H312 (Acute Dermal Toxicity Cat 4 — 'Harmful in contact with skin'), H317 (Skin Sensitization Cat 1 — 'May cause an allergic skin reaction'), and H304 (Aspiration Toxicity Cat 1 — 'May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways'). The skin-route hazards are the most relevant for normal use — bare-hand application is genuinely not advised; nitrile gloves are mandatory per SDS §8 prevention statement.
Is the kaolin abrasive safe for clearcoat?▾
Yes — kaolin is one of the mildest abrasives used in cleaner-waxes (calcined kaolin clay, CAS 66402-68-4 per SDS §3). It is rated for clearcoat use and standard automotive paint. It will not produce visible scratches under normal hand application. If you have an existing ceramic coating, however, do not use a cleaner-wax of any kind — the abrasive will degrade the coating; switch to the Pure Brazilian Carnauba (05550) or a coating-safe sealant instead.

Best wax on the market
I always use this wax for my car. I know this is gonna sound crazy, but I use this on my stove top. It protects the paint and makes it easy to clean and know the heat doesn’t burn it off. I’ve been doing this for years. I just put a coat on every 2 to 3 months and it keeps my stove, top protected and look in brand new.
