CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 26, 2026
TL;DR Universal-fit rear backseat hammock with a standout multi-point anchor system — the under-seat handle anchors are the feature that separates this from basic headrest-strap-only covers. Fits SUVs and most sedans adequately, with some extra material tucking needed on smaller cars. No airbag compatibility documentation exists from the manufacturer. The "100% Waterproof" claim is disputed by community evidence of liquid soaking through under real-world conditions. Currently out of stock on Amazon.
What it is and how it performs
The Gorilla Grip dog car seat protector is a universal-fit rear backseat hammock that can be deployed either as a standard seat cover or in hammock mode stretching between front and rear headrests to create a contained pet area. The primary material is a heavy-duty woven fabric — the Amazon specification table incorrectly lists "Leather"; product images and multiple Amazon verified-purchase reviewers describe a thick canvas-like woven construction. The backing features a synthetic rubber dotted non-slip pattern (not natural rubber latex). Anchoring uses five contact points: under-seat handle anchors, front and rear headrest straps, elastic bench seat straps, and the slip-resistant backing. Amazon verified-purchase reviewers (4.5★ across 7,302 reviews via Rainforest API) consistently praise the under-seat handle anchors as uniquely effective — one reviewer confirmed zero movement under three 2-year-old German Shepherds. The manufacturer claims "100% Waterproof Material," but at least one verified-purchase reviewer documented liquid soaking through during a dog vomit incident; the cover provides water resistance for light splashes, not guaranteed waterproofing for significant liquid volumes. No airbag or SAB compatibility information is published by the manufacturer. The side flaps protect door panels but have no positive retention mechanism, and several reviewers note they hang loose on vehicles where the rear seat blends into the door card.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
The right pick for an SUV or mid-size sedan owner who needs a rear backseat cover that will actually stay put under an active dog — the under-seat anchor system is community-confirmed to hold under heavy use and is the reason to choose this cover over simpler headrest-strap-only alternatives. The center zipper is a practical feature for vehicles shared between pets and passengers. Skip if waterproofing is a hard requirement (the claim is disputed by community evidence), if your vehicle has seat-bolster side-impact airbags and you need documented SAB compatibility, or if you drive a small car where side flap coverage matters — the flaps will not stay up without tucking on vehicles where the back seat doesn't have a clear gap from the door panel.
Safety and environmental impact
No chemical exposure pathway — this is a passive textile accessory with no SDS. No SDS exists or is required; no fragrance treatment, antimicrobial off-gas chemistry, or PFAS DWR surface treatment was found in the product listing or manufacturer documentation. The backing material is synthetic rubber (dotted non-slip pattern) — no natural rubber latex allergen concern. The woven fabric construction is consistent with a 2–3 year useful lifespan under regular pet-transport use; machine washable per product imagery. At end of life, the multi-layer composite (woven face, synthetic rubber backing, plastic hardware) is not readily recyclable without manual component separation, and no manufacturer take-back program is available.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Gorilla Grip dog seat protector work in a sedan?▾
It fits sedans, confirmed by Amazon verified-purchase reviewers in a 2016 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 Honda Civic, and a Volvo sedan. Smaller sedans tend to have excess material at the sides that needs to be tucked in. The side flaps have no retention mechanism and may not stay folded up against the door panel on vehicles where the rear seat blends into the door.
Is the Gorilla Grip dog car seat protector waterproof?▾
The manufacturer claims '100% Waterproof Material,' but at least one Amazon verified-purchase reviewer documented liquid soaking through during a dog vomit incident. The cover provides water resistance for light splashes and general pet use, but the waterproofing may not hold up to significant liquid volumes. The reviewer still recommended the product for seat protection overall despite the waterproofing failure.
Is the Gorilla Grip seat protector compatible with side airbags?▾
No airbag compatibility information is available from the manufacturer — the product listing, A+ content, and specification table contain no SAB or side-impact airbag statement. If your vehicle has seat-bolster side-impact airbags, consult the vehicle owner's manual and verify that any seat cover does not obstruct airbag deployment before installing.
How does the Gorilla Grip dog hammock stay in place?▾
The cover uses a multi-point anchoring system: under-seat handle anchors (pushed through the gap between seat cushion and seat back near the LATCH anchor points), adjustable snap-buckle headrest straps at both front and rear headrests, elastic bench seat straps tucked between the seat and floor, and a slip-resistant dotted backing on all seat-contact surfaces. Amazon verified-purchase reviewers consistently cite the under-seat handle anchors as the feature that prevents sliding.
Can a passenger still use a seatbelt with this seat cover installed?▾
Yes. The cover has a center zipper that allows one half to fold down for passenger access, and seatbelt openings are visible in product images to allow seatbelt buckling with the cover installed.

This is a really nice pet seat protector
This is a really nice pet seat protector. I have had two from other sellers in the past that cost more and were not as nice. The thing that stood out when I installed the protector was the straps on the bottom that go under the front of the seats. This causes the protector to be taught across the seat rather than looking like a hammock. The quick release straps and the center zipper work great and quickly allow a seat for s passenger as well as protection for a pet on the other side. The flaps that protect the ends of the seats are unique. I haven’t seen this before. I installed the protector in a large SUV and it fit perfectly. I’m not sure what the fit would look like in a small vehicle. Now let me address the center zipper as it applies to the protection on your animals. It is clear from the sellers insistence that this is a seat protector and not necessarily a pet protector that they realize the zipper, while incredibly comvenient, is probably a weak point in the material. I also suspect that if a large dog put his weight on the protector it might separate at the zipper. One of the first things I did when I bought my first seat protector years ago was to train my dogs not to try to lean on or try to climb over the protector. I don’t see any potential problems related to the zipper with my dogs. Others will have to assess this for their animals. I leave a protector in my vehicle all the time to protect from junk that I might throw in there. I also find that the back seat with the protector is the ideal place for groceries. It keeps them from rolling around and protects from spills. I was impressed enough to order a second protector for my son.
