TL;DR A 163-piece set covering all three drive sizes (1/4, 3/8, and 1/2-in) in SAE and metric, shallow and deep, with 6-point alloy steel sockets and GearWrench's off-corner loading design. Steel alloy is listed as generic "alloy steel" — explicit Cr-V designation is not in the product spec, though brand pattern strongly suggests it. The 10 mm metric appears to be included — no missing-10mm complaints in the reviewed sample. Hand-ratchet use only; not rated for impact wrenches.
What it is and how it performs
The 89073 covers all three drive sizes in one purchase: 1/4-in, 3/8-in, and 1/2-in, with both SAE and metric sockets in standard and deep variants throughout. The 163-piece count includes sockets plus accessories — actual socket count is not itemized in available spec data, but piece count is corroborated by a Jan 2026 verified purchaser who confirms receiving all 163 pieces and lists metric sizes up to 24mm deep on 3/8-in drive and larger sizes on 1/2-in drive. Steel is listed as "Alloy Steel" on Amazon; GearWrench's hand-socket line consistently uses chrome-vanadium, but the alloy is not explicitly labeled on this product's spec. All sockets are 6-point, confirmed in the product title. Community feedback at 4.0★ across 425 reviews is generally positive — reviewers specifically note sockets fit snugly on fasteners and praise the warranty process. Missing-socket complaints in 1-star reviews trace to receiving used or incomplete units via Amazon fulfillment, not design gaps. No case is included; the set ships in bags, and most buyers use aftermarket socket organizer rails. Not rated for impact use.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
The right pick for a home mechanic or enthusiast who wants a single set covering the full range of common automotive fasteners — 1/4-in for small fasteners, 3/8-in for engine-bay and underhood work, and 1/2-in for wheel lug nuts and suspension bolts — without purchasing multiple supplemental sets. The 6-point construction handles corroded and snug OEM bolts better than 12-point alternatives. Skip if you need impact-rated sockets for air or electric impact wrench use — these are hand-socket only. Also skip if you expect an organized storage case; this set ships in bags and requires a separate socket organizer purchase.
Safety and environmental impact
No chemical exposure pathway — alloy steel hand tool with no SDS. Alloy steel hand sockets are rated for hand-ratchet and breaker-bar use — not for impact wrenches; impact-rated sockets use a different alloy (chrome-molybdenum) and black-oxide finish, and using standard chrome-plated hand sockets on an impact driver risks shattering. Alloy steel sockets are fully recyclable as scrap metal; GearWrench's lifetime limited warranty is a documented lifecycle-extension mechanism that reduces disposal frequency. Quality socket sets of this construction regularly achieve 10–20+ year useful lives.
Frequently asked questions
Does the GEARWRENCH 89073 include a metric 10 mm socket?▾
The 10 mm metric appears to be included — no missing-10mm complaints appear in the reviewed sample of 425 ratings, and a Jan 2026 verified-purchase reviewer lists metric sizes up to 24mm on 3/8-in drive, consistent with a set that covers common metric fasteners. That said, the 10 mm is not confirmed from a manufacturer spec sheet or parts list for this specific ASIN, so the evidence is absence-of-complaints rather than documented confirmation.
Is the GEARWRENCH 89073 impact-rated?▾
No. This is a standard hand-socket set with a chrome polished finish. Impact-rated sockets use chrome-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy and black-oxide finish. Using standard hand sockets on an air or electric impact wrench risks shattering. One reviewer reported using these sockets with an impact wrench without issues — that anecdotal report does not change the construction or rating of the set.
What drive sizes does the GEARWRENCH 89073 cover?▾
All three standard drive sizes: 1/4-in, 3/8-in, and 1/2-in. The set covers both SAE and metric in standard and deep socket variants across all three drives.
Are the sockets 6-point or 12-point?▾
6-point, confirmed in the product title. Six-point sockets engage at the flat faces of a hex head rather than the corners, which significantly reduces the risk of rounding corroded or snug fasteners.
Does the GEARWRENCH 89073 come with a case?▾
No blow-mold case or tray is included. The set ships with sockets in bags inside boxes — typically the 1/2-in drive sockets in one box and the 1/4-in and 3/8-in drive sockets in another. Most purchasers use aftermarket socket organizer rails or magnetic trays to store and access the set.
What warranty does the GEARWRENCH 89073 carry?▾
GearWrench Standard Limited Lifetime Warranty. Community reviewers confirm a straightforward process — submit a photo of the damaged item on the GearWrench website with the part number, and replacements typically arrive within a week.

Great set at a great value
We all have that buddy that buys labels. He will proudly show off his $100,000 Snap-On tool collection that cost him 2 marriages. He's the same buddy that drinks vanilla-chai lattes with soy milk in the mornings while filming his oil-changing conquests on Tik-Tok; man-bun tucked neatly under the sticker-filled brim of his hat. When it's quitting time, he retires his latte in favor of Bud Light. He wouldn't be caught dead with any Gear Wrench tools in his tool box. Despite the fact that they offer the same lifetime warranty and function of the tools he bought off a truck that cost him easily 5 times the amount. They aren't Snap-On after all. They are yellow. For the family man who turns a wrench for a living or as a hobby, or simply needs a quality set of tools for fixing things around the house, you should seriously consider Gear Wrench. My tool box started with a bunch of hand-me-down items that I got from my dad, grandfather and uncles. Tools were always purchased when the need arose from brands like Craftsman or whatever was on sale. One day I discovered ratcheting wrenches from Gear wrench, and fell in love. Compact heads, smooth ratcheting function, and durable enough to survive a frustrated throw at a brick wall. I slowly started to gravitate towards the brand and have slowly expanded my tool box to include more and more items from Gear Wrench. In regards to this set, I have only compliments. You get a wife range of 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch drives. The sockets fit snugly on fasteners which help prevent rounding and fastener damage. They are polished to a mirror shine and look fantastic. Each piece is clearly labeled and made even easier to identify when stored on a socket rail. I have been incredibly happy with this set.Made of a high quality tool steel, i feel confident applying torque and leverage on them. Additionally, the selection in this kit will cover a broad range of tasks.I have had to warranty 2 tools from Gear Wrench previously. Both times the warranty prices was smooth and easy. I just sent them an email with a picture of the problem. Both circumstances a replacement was at my door step within 10 days.To summarize, you get a nice set of quality tools at less than 25% of the "Truck Price"... the warranty can't be beat, and every tool I've purchased manufactured from Gear Wrench has worked well and exceeded expectations. You can't go wrong with any of their products
