CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 27, 2026
TL;DR Read-only Bluetooth code reader for 1996+ gas vehicles: connects in under a minute, color-codes severity, and clears check-engine lights from a free app. No bidirectional capability and no substitute for a scan tool on ABS or SRS diagnostics — enhanced code coverage is vehicle-dependent and not independently verified on most makes.
What it is and how it performs
A compact Bluetooth dongle that plugs into the OBD-II port and pairs with iOS or Android. Basic code read, clear, and color-coded severity (green/yellow/red) are free, with no subscription. Confirmed working on Chevrolet, Honda, and Volvo in Amazon verified reviews; one documented failure on a 2002 Camaro SS that three competing scanners handled without issue. The listing claims extended access to ABS, SRS, and transmission codes, but community confirmation of these systems on specific makes is thin — actual coverage is vehicle-dependent. Live parameter data (RPM, temps) is available in-app. Pending code definitions showed "Unknown Issue" in the free tier per a top reviewer with 457 helpful votes. No bidirectional commands of any kind.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Best fit for a non-mechanical owner who wants to quickly decode a check-engine light, judge severity before calling a shop, and clear codes on one or two personal vehicles. Skip it if you need ABS or SRS code access on a specific make (verify coverage first), if you want to command vehicle systems like oil resets or TPMS resets (FIXD cannot do this), or if you prefer paying once rather than maintaining a subscription for full code definitions.
Safety and environmental impact
Passive Bluetooth device with no chemical emission and no internal battery. No FCC device authorization ID is on file at fcc.gov for this Bluetooth model; no UL or ETL certification documented. A Proposition 65 warning appears on the Amazon listing. No active CPSC recall found; no ECU communication errors documented in the 35,000+ review corpus. Standard e-waste drop-off at end of life.
Frequently asked questions
Does the FIXD scanner require a subscription?▾
No subscription is required to read and clear check-engine codes. The free app tier covers basic DTC read/clear and severity color-coding. The optional FIXD Premium subscription (billed monthly or annually) unlocks repair cost estimates, a mechanic hotline, vehicle value data, and AI guidance. Long-term reviewers consistently describe the free tier as sufficient for basic diagnostics.
Does FIXD work on all 1996+ vehicles?▾
It works on most 1996+ gasoline vehicles and 2006+ diesel vehicles, but coverage is not universal. At least one documented case exists of a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS failing to connect while three other OBD-II scanners connected successfully. FIXD recommends using the vehicle compatibility check at fixdapp.com before purchase.
Does FIXD have bidirectional capability — oil reset, TPMS reset, throttle relearn?▾
No. FIXD is a read-only code reader. It does not command any vehicle system. No actuator tests, oil life resets, TPMS resets, or throttle relearn functions are documented anywhere in the community review corpus. The enhanced code systems listed (ABS, SRS, Transmission, TPMS) reflect read capability only.
What enhanced codes does FIXD read?▾
Amazon A+ content lists ABS, SRS, Transmission, TPMS, ESP System, Airbag and Seatbelt, Drivetrain, Battery, and Check Engine Light as accessible code systems. Coverage for these systems on specific makes is vehicle-dependent and not independently verified by community forum tests at the same level as professional-tier scanners. Verify on your specific make before purchase.

This little item works great but it has a small caveat if you want its full functionality.
This little item works great, but it has a small caveat if you want its full functionality. As OBDII scanners go, this one does the job at a fraction of the price of a professional scanner. It shows all the information on the screen in an easy to set up software with an intuitive menu. Easy for even the least mechanically inclined people to use. However, you'll need a separate iPhone, iPad, or Android device to install the app onto.It color codes the issues as to their importance. Green means you should be fine and it's more of a suggestion than an issue, Yellow means check it out soon or have a mechanic take a look, Red means you should probably stop driving your car and set it on fire. Just kidding. But the information is displayed fully with the OBDII codes along with the explanations as to what they are. In my case, there was a Stored Code and a few Pending Codes. The Stored Code defined what the code is, however the Pending Codes showed 'Unknown Issue'. I had to go online later to look them up. There's also an option to clear the dash lights that did not work for me. So does the scanner work? Definitely. Is it worth it? Probably not, and here's why.The caveat I mentioned? You have to purchase their Premium version at a yearly fee of $99.00 if you want to unlock the scanner's full potential. It includes;"Cost and repair estimates from the Identifix database, Unlimited calls to our FIXD Mechanic Hotline for a trusted second opinion and DIY help from our network of ASE certified mechanics, And much more! FIXD Premium is a monthly subscription that is optional and is not required for use of the sensor."After the purchase price of $37, that makes this little bugger $137 right off the bat, with an additional $99/year after that. However, they do let you try it free for one week (cancel at any time). If you're using this scanner for multiple vehicles, and you're getting paid for it, then you might find the fee not so much of an inconvenience. However, if you're like me and are only using it on your daily driver, how often do you think you're going to use it to qualify that fee? I used it this once, found the codes, and now it'll probably sit on a shelf until the next time the need arises for it. And since I'm mechanically inclined, I can resolve the issues on my own. But, again, "the subscription is optional and is not required for use of the sensor."If you want a scanner that offers more functionality with no extra costs involved then purchase one of those instead. But if you're an average Joe or Jolene and you just want to see why your car has those dash lights always on, then this little guy does the job just fine.
