Undecan-1-ol Ethoxylated

  • Nonionic surfactants
  • CAS 34398-01-1

Classified for serious eye damage (contributes to H318 at mixture level when concentrated). At low concentrations (1–5% in formulas), acute oral and dermal toxicity is low. Main hazard is the alkaline pH of the mixture at typical use concentrations. Prop 65 warning traces to ethylene oxide residual — a trace byproduct of the ethoxylation manufacturing process; not a volatile hazard during product use.

Undecan-1-ol ethoxylated is a nonionic fatty alcohol ethoxylate surfactant used as an emulsifier and wetting agent in polishes, cleaners, and coatings. In glass polishes, it aids dispersion of cerium oxide abrasive particles and improves contact with glass surfaces. The primary hazard is the highly alkaline pH of the mixture (pH 10–11 in the 3D Glass Polish formula), which drives the H318 (serious eye damage) classification at the product level. The ingredient itself has low acute systemic toxicity but causes serious eye damage through the pH mechanism. Aquatic toxicity is confirmed by LC50 fish data (3.9 mg/L from ECOTOX), placing it in the range consistent with H411 chronic aquatic classification at the ingredient level. The mixture-level 3D Glass Polish SDS §2 does not classify H4xx at the mixture level, but the ingredient-level aquatic toxicity data is documented in SDS §12.
