Sulfonic acids, petroleum, calcium salts (CAS 61789-86-4) is an overbased petroleum calcium sulfonate (also described as calcium petroleum sulfonate), a UVCB substance derived from the sulfonation of petroleum-derived aromatic fractions followed by calcium neutralization and overbasing. It is a foundational corrosion inhibitor in calcium sulfonate complex greases and anti-seize compounds, providing three functions: alkaline reserve (total base number) that neutralizes acidic corrosion products, water displacement to protect metal surfaces from moisture and salt, and a sacrificial surface film that slows galvanic corrosion on dissimilar-metal fastener assemblies.

In the Loctite LB 8023 formulation this ingredient works in combination with other calcium sulfonate species (CAS 70024-69-0, CAS 68584-23-6, CAS 26264-06-2) to deliver the "marine grade" water-resistance and high-humidity corrosion protection that distinguishes calcium sulfonate anti-seize from simpler grease-based thread lubricants.

As with other petroleum sulfonate derivatives, this ingredient contributes to H317 (skin sensitizer) classification at mixture level when multiple sulfonate components are combined. The sensitization basis is occupational contact dermatitis data for the petroleum sulfonate class, not acute systemic hazard. Not readily biodegradable; persistent in the environment but low aquatic exposure potential from bound-to-fastener anti-seize applications.
