Polyolefin alkyl phenol alkyl amine is a Mannich base-class fuel detergent active. This class of chemistry works by attaching to carbonaceous deposits through the amine functionality and physically disrupting deposit adhesion, while the polyolefin backbone provides solubility in petroleum carrier solvents. Mannich base detergents are effective on injector deposits and intake valve carbon buildup in both port-injection and direct-injection engines.

The chemistry class is used in combination with alkaryl polyether co-actives (PEA-type chemistry) to provide broader system coverage. The Mannich base provides direct deposit-cleaving activity at lower concentrations, while polyetheramine co-actives provide sustained protective film formation.
