Pine Oil
- Terpene solvents
- CAS 8002-09-3
- IUPAC: Pine oil (terpene alcohol mixture, predominantly α-terpineol)
Pine Oil (CAS 8002-09-3) appears in 1 of the 1,812 car-care products CarCareTruth tracks (as of June 2026). It is classified as a VOC.
Skin and eye irritant; documented skin sensitizer in mixtures. Inhalation of vapors causes headache, nausea, and CNS effects. Pine oil is acutely toxic to aquatic organisms but biodegrades readily in soil and water.
Pine oil is a steam-distilled fraction of pine wood, dominated by α-terpineol and related monoterpene alcohols. It has been used as a cleaning solvent and disinfectant for over a century, and is a common ingredient in penetrating oils because its low surface tension and natural wicking action help the formula reach corroded threads that heavier petroleum carriers cannot enter.
The chemistry is reactive in a similar way to turpentine: terpene alcohols oxidize on exposure to air to form sensitizing peroxides. Repeated bare-hand contact can produce an allergic skin reaction (H317 in many mixtures). Inhaled vapors cause headache, dizziness, and CNS depression at high concentration — typical complaints from using terpene-based penetrating oils indoors.
Pine oil biodegrades readily and is not bioaccumulative, but its aquatic toxicity at concentration is documented. The combination of natural origin, biodegradability, and aquatic toxicity is common across terpene chemistry — biodegradable does not mean harmless to surface waters in the short term.

They describe the ingredient itself; whether a hazard applies to a finished product depends on its concentration and how it's used.
