Calcium Sulfonate
- Corrosion inhibitors
- IUPAC: Calcium sulfonate (overbased)
Calcium Sulfonate appears in 2 of the 1,812 car-care products CarCareTruth tracks (as of June 2026).
Not classified as hazardous under GHS. No H-codes assigned at product-use concentrations. Mild skin and eye irritation possible from prolonged contact — wash with soap and water. Not a carcinogen, sensitizer, or reproductive hazard.
Calcium sulfonate is an overbased detergent additive derived from the neutralization of sulfonic acids with calcium hydroxide. In grease formulations it serves multiple roles: as a thickener that creates the gel-like consistency holding oil in place on metal surfaces, as an extreme-pressure (EP) additive that protects against metal-on-metal wear under load, and as a corrosion inhibitor that forms a protective barrier against moisture and rust.
In white lithium grease products, calcium sulfonate is often used in a hybrid system alongside lithium soap thickeners — the calcium sulfonate complex contributes the EP and corrosion inhibition properties while the lithium hydroxystearate thickener provides the characteristic white, waxy grease body. The combination is common in professional-grade lubricants for automotive hinges, chains, and gear mechanisms.
From a health standpoint, calcium sulfonate at product-use concentrations is not classified as hazardous. It is not a skin sensitizer, respiratory sensitizer, or carcinogen. Environmental persistence from typical quantities applied to hinges and tracks is minimal.

Health and environment notes translate the manufacturer Safety Data Sheet, the GHS classification, and authoritative regulatory listings (California Prop 65, EPA). Not medical advice. They describe the ingredient itself; whether a hazard applies to a finished product depends on its concentration and how it's used.
