C14-16 Alkane Sulfonic Acid, Sodium Salt

  • Anionic surfactants
  • CAS 931-534-0
  • IUPAC: sulfonic acids, C14-16-alkane hydroxy and C14-16-alkene, sodium salts

At ingredient level: H315 (skin irritation) and H318 (serious eye damage). Not an ethoxylated surfactant — no 1,4-dioxane or ethylene oxide pathway; no Prop 65 listing. At consumer product concentrations (<0.5%), mixture-level classification is limited to H315. Readily biodegradable per EU REACH §12.

C14-16 alkane sulfonic acid sodium salts are alpha-sulfo fatty acid ester anionic surfactants used in cleaning formulations. They differ from the more common linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) and from ethoxylated nonionic surfactants — there is no ethoxylation step in their manufacture, which means no 1,4-dioxane or ethylene oxide process residues and no associated Prop 65 disclosure. At the ingredient level, these compounds carry H315 (skin irritation Cat 2) and H318 (serious eye damage Cat 1). At typical consumer product concentrations below 0.5%, the contribution to the mixture-level classification is limited — the H318 ingredient-level code does not necessarily translate to a mixture-level H318 when diluted to sub-threshold concentrations per EU CLP concentration-limit rules. Readily biodegradable per standard EU REACH §12 criteria for anionic surfactants of this class.
