  • Corrosion inhibitors
  • CAS 68584-23-6
  • IUPAC: Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-16-alkyl derivatives, calcium salts

Benzenesulfonic Acid, C10-16-Alkyl Derivs., Ca Salts (CAS 68584-23-6) appears in 1 of the 1,812 car-care products CarCareTruth tracks (as of June 2026).

Contributes to the H317 skin sensitization classification at mixture level in calcium sulfonate anti-seize SDSs. The sensitizer pathway is shared across the petroleum alkylbenzene sulfonate class. Not individually classified as a carcinogen, respiratory sensitizer, or asthmagen. At 1-5% in a petroleum-grease paste, acute hazard is low.

Benzenesulfonic acid, C10-16-alkyl derivatives, calcium salts (CAS 68584-23-6) is a calcium sulfonate corrosion inhibitor in the petroleum alkylbenzene sulfonate family. It differs from CAS 26264-06-2 (calcium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, the single C12 species) in that it covers the full C10-16 alkyl chain distribution. In calcium sulfonate anti-seize formulations it works alongside the longer-chain calcium sulfonates (CAS 70024-69-0) and overbased petroleum sulfonates (CAS 61789-86-4) to deliver the total base number and surface-film protection that resists rust and galvanic corrosion on threaded fasteners in marine and high-temperature service.

As with other petroleum alkylbenzene sulfonate calcium salts, this substance contributes to H317 (skin sensitizer) classification at mixture level when multiple sulfonate-derived ingredients are present in the formulation. The cumulative sensitization risk from the sulfonate class is the basis for the mixture-level classification, not acute hazard from any single ingredient at its 1-5% concentration.

Not readily biodegradable. Low water solubility in the calcium salt form limits aquatic exposure potential under normal anti-seize use conditions.
