CarCareTruth tracks Activated Bamboo Charcoal (CAS 7440-44-0) as a car-care ingredient. It is readily biodegradable.
Inert physical adsorbent with no chemical emission in normal product use. GHS HazCom 2012 SDS requirements do not apply — activated charcoal in a sealed bag format poses no inhalation pathway in normal consumer use. CAS 7440-44-0 (amorphous carbon). No Prop 65 listing. Occupational handling of loose activated carbon dust at high concentrations may warrant nuisance dust precautions (OSHA PEL 5 mg/m³ nuisance dust), not applicable to bagged consumer product use.
Activated bamboo charcoal is charcoal produced from bamboo through pyrolysis at 600–700°C, then activated at 1110–1300°F to expand micropore surface area. The activation process creates millions of internal micropores that physically adsorb odor molecules, volatile organic compounds, and moisture from surrounding air. Used in consumer air-purification bags, water filters, and refrigerator deodorizers. Unlike fragrance-based air fresheners, bamboo charcoal emits nothing — it only adsorbs. At end of life, spent bamboo charcoal is fully compostable and can be worked into garden soil as a carbon and mineral amendment.
