Nokian Tyres was founded in 1932 in Nokia, Finland, where the Nokia River gave the city its name. Nokian has produced tires in the region ever since, making it one of the world's longest-running tire manufacturers from a single location. The company coined the term "winter tire" and invented the world's first dedicated winter tire in 1934, followed decades later by the first studless winter tire design. The Hakkapeliitta name comes from Finland's legendary 17th-century cavalry, the Hakkapeliitat, whose battle cry "hakkaa päälle" ("hack them down") became a symbol of Finnish tenacity in harsh conditions. Nokian operates its primary production facility in Nokia, Finland, along with plants in Russia and the United States. Its tires are sold across more than 60 countries, with particular strength in Nordic and Northern European markets and growing presence in North America through its SUV and passenger winter lines.
