Little Trees was created in 1952 by Julius Samann, a Swiss-born chemist who developed a method of infusing compressed paper with concentrated fragrance oils. The tree-shaped design and the concept of a hanging car air freshener were both Samann's inventions, and Car-Freshner Corporation has manufactured them continuously in Watertown, New York since the beginning. The product line has expanded from the original Royal Pine to over 60 scent variants, with Black Ice as the current bestseller. Little Trees remains the most recognized car air freshener brand globally, with distribution in over 150 countries. The format is unchanged: a die-cut pressboard card impregnated with fragrance, sealed in a foil pouch, hung from the rearview mirror via an elastic string. Car-Freshner Corporation also produces the Little Trees Vent Wrap, Fiber Can, and Vent Liquid lines, but the hanging paper tree remains the core product.
