HeatShield began in the early 1980s as an expansion of Aircraft Covers, Inc., which had been making protective covers for airplanes, jets and helicopters. The company's account is that Heather Perlitch decided to try the product as a car window shade, and the automotive line grew from there. It still manufactures in Morgan Hill, California.
The core product is "The Original Windshield Sun Shade," sold in a Silver Series and a Gold Series. HeatShield describes its process as "modern patterning techniques, computer aided cutting equipment and our expert sewing team," with each shade "precisely cut using our computer-driven cutting machines." The catalog is organized by vehicle rather than by size: when HeatShield does not already hold a pattern for a vehicle, it either arranges access to that vehicle at a dealership to create one, or sends the customer a patterning kit. For certain designs the company states a tolerance of up to a quarter inch of gap.
The company says its shades are "sturdy enough to be supported with only the sun visors, while remaining flexible enough to bend around the rearview mirror," and that they are designed to be rolled up for storage rather than folded, since folding can compromise the material. Products carry a one-year limited warranty covering manufacturing and material defects. HeatShield sells direct and through Amazon and Walmart. No SDS index is published; every product in the line is a passive physical accessory with no SDS requirement.
