Volkswagen GTI Mk5 (1K)

Mk5 GTI introduced the 2.0T turbocharged direct-injection engine to the GTI lineup. 200 hp, DSG or 6-speed manual. Widely considered the GTI that re-cemented the hot-hatch reputation after the lukewarm Mk4. Plaid 'Interlagos' seats returned. Excellent chassis balance.
Watch out: 2.0T FSI engine: timing-chain tensioner failure is the big one (later TSI revisions addressed it but Mk5 GTI is mostly FSI). Carbon buildup on intake valves at 60k-100k miles is universal — walnut blasting is the standard service. DSG fluid/filter service every 40k miles.
