Volkswagen Golf Mk5 (1K)
2006–2009 · 1K · hatchback
Mk5 Golf was sold as 'Rabbit' in the US (2006-2009) before the Golf name returned for Mk6. PQ35 platform, much-improved chassis. 2.5L inline-5 base engine (Rabbit-specific to US); 2.0T (GTI). DSG dual-clutch transmission introduced. The Mk5 GTI is widely cited as the GTI that re-established the brand's hot-hatch credentials.
Watch out: DSG (DQ250 wet-clutch) requires fluid and filter service every 40k miles — many used cars have been neglected here. 2.0T engine: timing-chain tensioner failure (TSI) is the marquee Mk5 GTI watch-out, addressed in later TSI revisions. Coil-pack failure is a frequent but cheap fix.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
