The 4th-gen 4Runner shares its N210 platform and 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 with the 2nd-gen Tacoma. The 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 (235hp early, 270hp with VVT-i from 2005) is the only V8 ever offered in a 4Runner. KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) and X-REAS handling shocks make the high trims handle surprisingly well for a body-on-frame SUV.

Watch out: 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 timing belt service every 90k miles — failure is interference-engine catastrophic. Includes water pump, idler/tensioner, cam seals; $1,200-$2,000 job at a shop.
