Subaru WRX 2nd Generation (GD chassis, bugeye/blobeye/hawkeye)

20022007 · GD · sedan

The GD chassis brought the WRX to the US in 2002 with the EJ205 2.0L turbo flat-four (around 227 hp). Three facelifts gave the run its nicknames: bugeye (2002-2003), blobeye (2004-2005), and hawkeye (2006-2007, when US WRX moved to the EJ255 2.5L). The STI launched in the US for 2004 with the EJ257 2.5L turbo (around 300 hp), inverted struts, Brembo brakes, and DCCD.

Watch out: Owner reports of EJ ringland and rod-bearing failures on heavily modified or hot-tuned engines, head-gasket weeping on high-mileage 2.5L cars, and turbo banjo-filter clogging starving the turbo of oil if maintenance is skipped. Used STIs are often modified; verify the tune history before buying.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
