Subaru WRX 1st Generation (GC8 chassis, JDM-era)
1992–2000 · GC8 · sedan
The original WRX (and STi variants) used the GC chassis (sedan GC8, coupe GC8/GM8 in some markets) with EJ20 turbo flat-fours and Subaru's symmetrical AWD. The US never received this generation new. Most US examples are JDM imports brought in under the 25-year exemption (1992 cars eligible 2017, full run eligible by 2025). The bugeye nickname belongs to the second-gen GD, not this car.
Watch out: Owner reports of aging turbo seals and rear-main-seal leaks on high-mileage EJ20s, rust on rocker panels and rear strut towers on imported cars from humid climates, and worn early-style center differential service on STi variants. Verify Japan-import paperwork is in order.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
