Ram ProMaster 1st Generation (Fiat Ducato 250)

Based on the third-generation Fiat Ducato (platform 250). Front-wheel drive — unusual in the US cargo-van segment, which gives ProMaster a lower load floor than RWD competitors. Engines: 3.6L Pentastar V6 (280hp) is the only North American option from 2021 on, paired with the ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic. Earlier 2014-2016 trucks had a 3.0L EcoDiesel option (now discontinued in the US). One of the most common DIY van-life conversion platforms thanks to the boxy interior and FWD layout.

Watch out: ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic shudder/hesitation — same family-wide transmission story as the Cherokee KL and Compass MP. Front-wheel-drive layout puts massive load on CV axles when carrying heavy cargo; outer CV boot tears and inner CV failures are well-documented at 80-120k. The 3.6L Pentastar's left-bank rocker arm story applies to early-build ProMaster vans too.
