Porsche 924: front-engine inline-four with an Audi-sourced 2.0L base engine, rear transaxle. 924 Turbo (931) and 924 S (924 chassis with the 944's 2.5L) are the desirable variants. Long considered the 'cheap' Porsche — values climbing as 944 prices push some buyers downstream.

Watch out: Audi-derived 2.0L base engine is more an Audi part-share concern than a Porsche one — find an indie shop that knows both. Timing belt service is mandatory. Many cars have lived hard lives because of the low entry price; a well-kept 924 S or 924 Turbo is rare.
