Mitsubishi 3000GT 1st Gen
1990–2000 · Z16A · coupe
Mitsubishi's flagship grand-touring sports car, known as the GTO in Japan, the 3000GT globally, and (in badge-engineered form) as the Dodge Stealth in the US (1991-1996). 3.0L 6G72 24-valve V6 in naturally aspirated (~222hp) or twin-turbo (~320hp) form on the VR-4. 5-speed manual or 6-speed manual (late) on VR-4; 4-speed automatic on lesser trims. RWD on base, full-time AWD on VR-4 with mechanical limited-slip and active aero (front splitter + rear wing that adjusted with speed). Four-wheel steering on VR-4. Produced 1990-2000 (Japan), sold in North America as 3000GT 1991-1999. Three series of facelift over the run.
Watch out: VR-4 cars are mechanical complexity multipliers, twin turbos, AWD, 4WS, active aero, and most repairs require dropping the front subframe to access anything. The transfer case and rear differential have documented wear patterns. Timing belt is a 60k-mile interval and the engine is interference. Most cars on the market have been modified, and parts availability for the AWD/4WS/aero systems is increasingly thin. Best as a documented-history collector buy, not a daily driver.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
