Mini Cooper 3rd BMW Generation (F55/F56)

2014–2024 · F55/F56 · hatchback

Third-generation BMW Mini. F56 = three-door hatch, F55 = five-door hatch, F57 = convertible. Switched to BMW's modular B-series engines: 1.5L B38 turbocharged three-cylinder (base Cooper) and 2.0L B48 turbocharged four-cylinder (Cooper S, JCW). Much more refined and dramatically more reliable than the Prince-engine R56 generation. Manual or Aisin/Steptronic auto. Final production 2024 — U25 is electric-only.

Watch out: Cooper S B48 cars: timing-chain tensioner concerns on early production (largely addressed by 2017+ revisions). Cooper base B38 three-cylinder: water-pump and oil-filter housing leaks on high-mileage cars. Both engines: carbon buildup on intake valves at 80k-120k miles is expected. Overall reliability significantly better than R56 generation.
