2013–2020 · R231 · convertible

Aluminum body shed ~250 lb versus R230. M278 biturbo V8 (SL550), M157 biturbo V8 in SL63 AMG, M279 biturbo V12 in SL65 AMG (621 hp). 2016 LCI brought minor styling/tech updates. Last conventional SL — the next generation (R232) is built and marketed as AMG, not a separate SL line.

Watch out: M278 timing chain guides and turbocharger coolant leaks on early cars. ABC active suspension carryover concerns. Folding roof hydraulics still demand respect — every R231 owner knows the leak symptoms list.
