Second-gen M-Class — bigger, more refined, and a major recovery from the W163's quality reputation. M272 V6 (ML350), M273 V8 (ML500/550), OM642 V6 diesel (ML320/350 BlueTEC), and the M156 6.2L NA V8 in the ML63 AMG. The nameplate eventually became GLE for the 2016 model year LCI cars.

Watch out: M272 V6 balance shaft gear wear (same W211 saga). OM642 diesel: swirl flaps, oil cooler leaks. Airmatic / ADS (Adaptive Damping System) failures on optioned cars. Catalytic converter theft is a current external risk on these cars.
