Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463 (1st Generation civilian)

19902018 · W463 · suv

The original civilian G-Wagen ran the W463 chassis from 1990 all the way to 2018 with the same fundamental body shell. Body-on-frame, three locking differentials (the only production SUV at launch with all three), live axles front and rear. AMG variants spanned G55 supercharged, G63 5.5L biturbo V8, and the absurd G65 V12. Pre-2002 cars are mechanically simpler; post-2002 brought airbags and the M113 V8 family.

Watch out: Rust at the rear wheel arches, lower tailgate, and battery tray on cars that have lived outside. The body shell does not have galvanizing on early cars.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
