Mazda Mazdaspeed3 BK/BL

2007–2013 · BK/BL · hatchback

High-performance variant of the Mazda3 hatchback. 2.3L MZR DISI Turbo I4 (~263hp / 280 lb-ft), the same family as the Mazdaspeed6 engine. 6-speed manual only, no automatic offered. FWD with limited-slip diff. Sold in two body styles: 2007-2009 on the BK Mazda3 chassis (Mazdaspeed3 Gen 1), 2010-2013 on the BL Mazda3 chassis (Gen 2). One of the strongest factory-FWD hot hatches of its era; torque steer at full boost is part of the experience. Mazda did not continue the Mazdaspeed3 into the BM Mazda3 generation.

Watch out: Multiple chronic issues are well-documented. (1) Direct-injection 2.3L DISI engine carbon-builds up intake valves, a manual decarbon cycle every 60-80k miles is normal-maintenance, not optional. (2) The high-pressure fuel pump lobe on the camshaft wears prematurely on Gen 1 cars, replacement is non-trivial. (3) Clutch and transmission inputs on hard-launched cars wear early. Approach with eyes wide open; budget for $1-2k/year of preventative work on top of normal maintenance.
