Mazda Tribute 1st/2nd Gen
2001–2011 · EP/CD2 · suv
Compact SUV co-developed with Ford and sold as the Mazda twin of the first-generation Ford Escape. Based on the Mazda 626 platform that Ford rebadged as CD2. Engines: 2.0L Ford Zetec I4 / later Mazda L3 2.3L I4, or the 3.0L Ford Duratec V6. 4-speed automatic (early) and 5-speed automatic (later), some manual variants early. FWD or part-time AWD with hill descent control. Tuned with stiffer suspension than the Ford Escape for a 'sportier' (read: harsher) ride. Discontinued after the 2011 model year as Mazda exited the platform-sharing arrangement and replaced it with the Skyactiv-platform CX-5.
Watch out: Mechanically essentially a Ford Escape, same problem patterns. The 3.0L V6 has documented coolant-leak / water-pump issues at higher mileage. The 4-speed automatic on early cars is the weakest powertrain link; budget for a transmission rebuild on any high-mileage Tribute V6. Rust on the rear wheel arches and rocker panels in salt-belt states is severe; physically inspect before buying.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
