Mazda Protege BJ (incl. Mazdaspeed Protege)

19992003 · BJ · sedan

The BJ Protege was sold in the US from 1999 to 2003 as a compact sedan (with the Protege5 wagon arriving in 2002) using 1.6L, 1.8L, and 2.0L FS-series engines depending on year and trim. The Mazdaspeed Protege launched for 2003 with a turbocharged 2.0L making around 170 hp, Racing Beat-tuned suspension, and a Callaway-developed intercooler setup. It was replaced by the Mazda3 for 2004.

Watch out: Owner reports of FS-engine sludge on neglected oil-change intervals, rust on rear wheel arches and rocker panels on salt-belt cars, and Mazdaspeed Protege turbocharger seal wear on aging units. Stock front strut mounts and rear shocks are common wear items.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
