Mazda CX-7 Single Generation
2007–2012 · ER · suv
The CX-7 launched for 2007 as a sport-focused midsize crossover with a 2.3L MZR DISI turbocharged four (around 244 hp) and FWD or AWD. A naturally aspirated 2.5L joined later in the run. It was replaced by the CX-5 for 2013 and is now a cautionary tale among used-car shoppers because of the turbo engine's documented failure mode.
Watch out: Well-documented turbocharger failure on the 2.3L DISI turbo engine caused by oil starvation tied to small oil-feed line restrictions, infrequent oil changes, and timing chain stretch / VVT actuator issues. The combination is one of the most consistent crossover engine failure stories of the era. Many surviving CX-7 turbo cars have already had at least one turbo replaced. Strict 5,000-mile oil changes are non-negotiable for the few survivors.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
