Mazda Mazda6 GJ

20142021 · GJ · sedan

Third-generation Mazda6, sedan only in the US (a wagon was sold abroad). Built on the Skyactiv chassis. Engines: 2.5L Skyactiv-G I4 (~187hp); for the 2018 model year Mazda added a 2.5L Skyactiv-G Turbo I4 (227-250hp depending on octane), the long-awaited V6 replacement, finally giving the 6 real midsize-sedan power. 6-speed manual (early years) or 6-speed Skyactiv automatic. FWD. Mazda discontinued the 6 in North America after the 2021 model year, citing the move toward crossovers. CX-5 outsold the 6 by 9-to-1.

Watch out: Skyactiv-G fuel-dilution-in-oil pattern applies to GJ as well, particularly on short-trip-heavy ownership. The 2.5T turbo cars have no chronic failure pattern but the cooling system is working harder than on the N/A versions. Rear suspension trailing-arm bushings wear earlier than the rest of the chassis.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
