Kia Niro DE (1st Generation)

First-gen Niro launched as Kia's dedicated electrified subcompact crossover, sharing platform DNA with the Hyundai Ioniq AE. US lineup: 1.6L Kappa hybrid (139 hp combined) with a 6-speed DCT (not a CVT, a rarity in the hybrid segment), plug-in hybrid added 2018, and full battery-electric Niro EV (64 kWh, 239 miles EPA range) added 2019. Built in Hwaseong, Korea.

Watch out: The 1.6L Kappa hybrid powertrain has sidestepped the Theta II recall pattern, which is a relief. The DCT can feel hesitant in stop-and-go, and the Niro EV had a few minor battery-cooling recalls (not the catastrophic Kona Electric pack-fire recall). Verify all open campaigns before any purchase.
